Modules from the Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT50307)
Island Health College is pleased to offer a limited number of Diploma level modules in third term of 2010 and first term 2011. Those would be a great opportunity for qualified Remedial Massage Practitioners to learn, update or refresh some valuable skills for your practice, while gaining CPE / PME points.
TRIGGER POINT:
At the completion of this course, participants will:
• Have an understanding of the pathophysiology of myofascial trigger points and its causes in accordance with current theory.
• Understand the presentation of trigger points including the nature of pain referral patterns.
• Be proficient at assessing clients for the presence of trigger points through history taking and digital examination.
• Be aware of other conditions which have presentations similar to those of trigger points.
• Be proficient at treating trigger points using the most effective techniques according to current theory.
• Have gained experience at integrating trigger point therapy into an over-all remedial massage treatment.
• Be proficient at history taking, recording assessment findings, treatment given and the effectiveness of treatment.
• Be able to advise clients regarding self help treatment.

DEEP TISSUE:
At the completion of this course, participants will:
• Have an understanding of the role and effect of deep manual pressure on muscles and fascia.
• Have developed proficiency to the level required of a remedial practitioner in a range of deep tissue massage techniques including - deep longitudinal stripping, active and passive engagement techniques, neuromuscular techniques, "pin and stretch", cross-fibre friction and friction treatment of scar tissue.
• Through practise, be able to assess the state of muscle and fascia by digital palpation.
• Have enough skill and knowledge to be able to select appropriate techniques and incorporate them into other massage modalities.
• Understand the contraindications to deep tissue massage.
• Be proficient at history taking, recording assessment findings, treatment given and the effectiveness of treatment.
• Be able to advise clients regarding self help treatment.
• Have a wider understanding of the particular needs of specific demographic groups in regards to massage treatment.

MET / PNF :
At the completion of this course, participants will:
• Have an understanding of the nature, role and application of MET/ PNF to a standard required for practice as a remedial massage therapist.
• Be able to perform a thorough assessment of a client's posture and musculoarticular function using history taking, orthopaedic tests and palpation to the standard required for practice in remedial massage.
• Have a good understanding of the procedure for performing MET/ PNF.
• Have acquired basic skill in the use of MET/ PNF for appropriate treatment of the main muscle groups of the body to a standard whereby they can practice effectively and build on their skills over time.
• Understand the contraindications to MET/ PNF.
• Be able to advise clients regarding self help treatment.
• Be able to accurately record assessments, treatments and outcomes.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE:
At the completion of this course, participants will:
• Have a sound understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system at a diploma level of study.
• Have an understanding of common pathologies that are addressed by lymphatic drainage massage and the role of lymphatic drainage massage in body detoxification, to the level expected of a professional remedial massage practitioner.
• Have a sound knowledge of the contraindications to lymphatic drainage massage and the situations where it is appropriate to refer-on clients.
• Be able to take an appropriate client history.
• Be able to perform a one hour detoxification lymphatic drainage treatment at a standard expected of a professional remedial massage practitioner.
• Be able to treat clients with minor transient lymph oedema.
• Be able to advise clients on self help measures for the maintenance of lymphatic health.

SPORTS MASSAGE:
At the completion of this course, participants will:
• Have a good understanding of the role of massage in sport.
• Have an understanding of the role of massage as a pre-event preparation, a post-event treatment and injury check and as part of an injury recovery program.
• Be able to apply their knowledge and massage skill to put together an appropriate remedial treatment and perform the techniques with the proficiency expected of a remedial massage therapist in a sports setting.
• Have an understanding of common sporting injuries and how they are treated.
• Be proficient in the first aid treatment of the most common sporting injuries.
• Have a good understanding of, and be able to correctly and appropriately use heat and cold applications.
• Be able to advise clients regarding self help treatment, including teaching them self-managed active and passive muscle stretching exercises.
• Be able to accurately record assessments, treatments and outcomes.

MASSAGE FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN:
At the completion of the course the participants will:
• Have a good understanding of pregnancy and foetal development to the standard required for this course.
• Have a good understanding of the role of massage for the pregnant and the postpartum woman.
• Be skilled in the techniques of pregnancy and postpartum massage.
• Have a good understanding of the role of massage in infant development and parent-infant bonding.
• Be skilled in the techniques of infant massage, including child with high needs.
• Have a good understanding of the role of massage in the physical, psychological, emotional and social development of children.
• Have a good understanding of the legal aspects involved in the massaging of children.
• Have learned the special considerations needed when working with child clients.
